In the study group, those participants who were raised in difficult economic circumstances showed DNA patterns in which groups of genes changed in ways that would have traditionally helped humans adapt to impoverished environments.
For example, there were changes that could boost activity in immunity genes, which did not surprise researchers, because traditionally people who lived in poverty were exposed to lots of disease.
"They see the signal from the mother as being 'it's going to be a harsh world, there's going to be a lot of bacteria around, prepare yourself,'" Syzf said.
He added that the impact of poverty during childhood on the DNA methylation was found to be much greater than the impact of a person's economic circumstances as an adult, or other factors such as whether the mother smoked while pregnant.

Last night, I was watching Thalassa, the ocean magazine, on TV5 and I couldn't believe what I was watching.

Plastic doesn't go away with the years. It just fragments itself into tiny microscopic bits. It stays around. For instance, some US beaches are part sand (2/3) and plastic (1/3).

But, plastic can also be found right in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Trash from the US west coast is sucked into the Pacific, follows some currents, joins with more trash coming from Asia and then, just moves in circle in the middle of the Pacific. That's the trash vortex.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135° to 155°W and 35° to 42°N and estimated to be twice the size ofTexas.[1] The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of suspended plastic and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.

Despite its size and density, the patch is not visible from satellite photography because it consists of very small pieces, almost invisible to the naked eye [2] and most of its contents are suspended beneath the surface of the ocean. (via Wikipedia).

The center of the North Pacific Gyre is a relatively stationary region of the Pacific Ocean (the area it occupies is often referred to as the horse latitudes). The circular rotation around it draws waste material in and has led to the accumulation of flotsam and other debris. While historically this debris has biodegraded, the gyre is now accumulating vast quantities of plastic and marine debris. Rather than biodegrading, plastic photodegrades, disintegrating in the ocean into smaller and smaller pieces. These pieces, still polymers, eventually become individual molecules, which are still not easily digested. Some plastics photodegrade into other pollutants.

Over 7 million tons of plastic spanning an area twice the size of Texas destroying our oceans and harming our food chains.

Fortunately, a few thousand kilometers south from this plastic hell, you can encounter a paradise: Lord Howe Island, Australia.
